Zone Chess has improved somewhat, at least for Speed Chess or Blitz.
Long ago chess enthusiasts would take Blitz Clocks with them to chess clubs to play often loud boisterous speed chess with slapping of clocks and laughings out loud and terrible mistakes under time pressure.
Now one can surf online and save the face to face meetings and travel costs.

Looks like there is a relatively new "pairings" program based on identification with Zone name.
It used to be that online pairings debates would be half the fun.
One player would chase another player for ratings points.
One's rating at stake would depend on two factors, the ratings of another player and ones own.

To further describe ratings, one might imagine fighting with a World Heavyweight in boxing.
What would the purse be?
How many contenders wouldn't like a chance to say that fair and square "I decked Ali!"?
Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.
For those with chess ratings differing 400 or more points, the higher rated player gets next to nothing for a win and has everything to lose.
The pursuits can be similar and the effects of the avoidings comical indeed.
How gracefully bow out?
RUN ALI! RUN!!!

Imagine a system where one might sit for hours to try to increase ones rating by at most 20 points, a win against a player out of a category and even getting a game to win those points when one can lose nothing based on a reweighting formula.
Brag of even getting a game? Standard show of friendship?
How about talk of a win? Ability to extract a game where all was won?
Faint heart never won fair lady.
